How Somatic Telehealth Works

There are pros and cons to working with a therapist online.

  • It is easier to fit into a busy schedule.

  • Can be better for clients with chronic pain, illness, or chemical sensitivities.

  • Some clients feel more comfortable accessing internal states in the comfort of their own home.

  • Some people find it easier to connect with their therapist online, while some might find it to be more difficult.

  • Telehealth might be more affirming for you if you are uncomfortable with eye contact or proximity.

  • Online somatic therapy might help you access regulated states at home more easily since you will be practicing mindfulness at home instead of in office.

Important things to note about working somatically online.

  • Having a solid internet connection is incredibly important. Poor connection speeds can interrupt the flow of our conversation and might make it harder to process what’s coming up for you.

  • The more of your body I can see, the better! I will look at things like your posture, tension, facial expression, balled fists, ect. It would be ideal to set your camera up to have your whole body in view, or at least hips up.

  • While some may expect somatic therapy to involve a lot of movement or walking around the room, most of our work will be done while you’re seated in stillness. Somatic therapy focuses on bringing awareness to your body’s internal reactions to traumatic memories, allowing us to work with those responses rather than telling the story of what happened.
